A traditional art form that dates back to Africa, is greatly influenced by the urban customs of the African Americans. This is stemming from stories that used to be told in cunning ways by this hero, who would play tricks and sometimes refuses to obey authority and conforming to normal behaviors, this hero would be then called the “trickster”. This was continued through to the African Americans art culture, where it was used as a medium to telling stories of myths and legends in places such as libraries, community centers, street corner gatherings, college campuses and bar.

This would see the oral traditions being a continued fixture in the everyday way of life and was even being used as a combination with other art forms that was being used already, for example singing the blues. There would be a creativity involved as well because they had to improvise a lot when reciting some of these stories, so sometimes a lot of duplication.

This art form of chanting or talking is referred to as chatting, toasting or deejaying and is more often than not done with the use of a beat or rhythm. There are many twist to this toasting story, as some or of the view that it is leaning more to the males as the majority of toasting that you will hear contains a lot sexual innuendos and profanity, but there is still a lot material that that is geared towards good family listening.

Toasting was now been seen extending in various genres along with the Africans, there was Jamaica music genres including the reggae, dub, dancehall, Ska and lovers rock. In the United States it has developed into emceeing, that is a mixture of the chanting and talking in the hip hop music. There was even another version of it where the toasting and singing would be combined to form singjaying.

How toasting combined with the Jamaican music
There was a new development in Jamaica music in the late 60’s and extended to the early 70’s, there was now a new style called deejay toasting. On the sound systems that were playing all over the country at this time, the deejays started adding vocals or toasting to the music. This developments were extending wide and far everyone was getting into this new style which would include, chants, rhythmic tunes, boastful remarks, screams, squeals and story telling that rhymes.

A recording engineer at the time named Osbourne “King” Ruddock, started created these tracks for the DJ’s to use during their toasting. He would create the discs or more popular known in Jamaica as the dub plates and this would be done by putting in sound effects and echo, then he would leave out the vocals.

This new style was well received that some artist started doing their songs in deejay toasting. It even developed outside of Jamaica, the artist started touring and other persons catch on in other parts of world. Some of the popular Jamaican artist was U-Roy and Michigan and Smiley. Jamaican deejay doing this musical rhyming now started to influence the dancehall style a lot and extended wider to African American community in the form of rapping.

This was the beginning of a fruitful union as many dancehall artists went on to excelled in the US pop market with mega hits. You have artist such as Shabba Ranks, Sean Paul, Damian Marley and Shaggy, that can be classified as toasting stars from Jamaica.
